VDI : Desktop Computing in Virtual World II

In previous article I discussed about the basics of Virtual Desktop Infrastructure. In this article I would like to discuss about the technologies involved in implementing your own VDI.

As you aware that there are different components needed to implement a successful VDI, as a matter of fact you need to have better knowledge about those components. That’s why this article came into picture.

Let’s first talk about Hosting Infrastructure for VDI and why is that so important?

Hosting Infrastructure means the place where we implement our Virtual Desktops. It can be either physical or virtual. But recommended is Virtual, because it has all the efficiencies, benefits and flexibilities. There are 3 major virtualization technologies available in current market to host the virtual desktops in virtualization infrastructure.

  • VMware ESX Server (vSphere)

  • Citrix XenServer

  • Microsoft Hyper – V

What ever the underlying technology is the target task would be the same, that is virtualizing the physical environments. If you are new bee about Virtualization go through this article “Virtualization : Basics” to know about how virtualization changes our physical world, what are its benefits, its architecture etc. If you still have any questions related to the basics please mail me at charan@isupportyou.net. As discussed in that article, we can utilize our physical resources in very efficient manner with all the features developed by the product vendor. Let’s go through the installation of these three products in our lab, after that you can choose what is best suitable for your learning interests. After the installation completed, we will be having a Hosting Infrastructure ready for us to implement VDI.

ESXi 4.1 Installation in VMware Workstation 7

ESXi41 Installation in VMware Workstation 7

Installing Citrix XenServer 5 inside VMware Workstation 7

HyperV Installation in Windows2008R2Std Edition

HyperV Installation in Windows2008R2Std Edition

After installing the hosting infrastructure we need to configure it using its own client first. Once configuration and everything is done your infra is ready to go.

Client Software for Hypervisors

  • VMware ESX Server – vSphere Client

  • Citrix XenServer – XenClient

  • Hyper-V – Microsoft Management Console (You can find it in Administrative tools listed as Hyper-V)

Interesting article right, we have still a lot to do. Keep following latest articles and videos. Don’t forget to Subscribe.

I hope this is informative for you, I would like to thank you for reading it.
