In this article I would like to show what are the different methods available to install active directory in windows server 2003. I know there are lot of videos and articles out there already on the internet, but this is a kind of consolidation of all the methods at one place.

In these demonstrations I have created Primary Domain Controller and Backup/Secondary Domain Controller in a Domain called isupportyou.net. You can use any combination of method to install active directory in your environment. I have installed active directory in following methods

  • Standard and Straight forward Installation using DCPROMO
  • Automated installation Method using pre-created answer file “DCPROMO /ANSWER
  • Install from Media Method using PDC AD Backup file “DCPROMO /ADV

Environment :
1. Two Windows Server 2003 x64Bit Enterprise Edition Servers
2. Connected using cross cables
3. Domain Name: isupportyou.net
4. Server 1 Name : WIN2K3PDC        IP Address : 192.168.220.20
5. Server 2 Name : WIN2K3BDC        IP Address : 192.168.220.30

IFM Method only used when we install additional domain controllers which are located in long distance from the primary domain controller. To avoid bandwidth and network disconnection issues while installing Active Directory this method is very useful.
